Charlotte Ballet operates the Patricia McBride and Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux Center for Dance in uptown Charlotte. Director of Marketing & Communications

The Director of Marketing & Communications is a strategic and hands-on leader responsible for ticket sales marketing, brand stewardship, and all communications for Charlotte Ballet organization.

This role shapes and executes integrated campaigns that grow audiences, drive enrollment, increase earned revenue, and strengthen the organization’s visibility and community connection while remaining directly involved in key deliverables across digital marketing, content, media relations, and community engagement.

Reporting Relationship

Reports to the Executive Director and works in close partnership with the Artistic Director and Director of Philanthropy and External Relations for Charlotte Ballet.

This role will oversee a small marketing and communications team and external vendors and consultants.

Key Responsibilities

Ticket Sales & Revenue Marketing

  • Lead and execute marketing campaigns for mainstage productions, subscriptions, single tickets, education programs, Academy enrollment, and special events.
  • Directly supervise Box Office and ticketing staff to align pricing, promotions, and sales goals.
  • Track sales pacing and adjust campaigns in real time to maximize revenue.
  • Be accountable for ticket sales, marketing performance, and revenue related KPI’s.

Brand, Creative Direction & Storytelling

  • Serve as steward of the organization’s brand voice and visual identity.
  • Ensure that the repertoire, artists, and mission are communicated in ways that are compelling, engaging, inclusive and accessible to both new and experienced audiences.
  • Oversee creative assets including copy, design, photography, and video.

Communications & Public Relations

  • Manage media relations, press releases, and opening night visibility.
  • Support organizational announcements and leadership communications.
  • Prepare messaging and responses for sensitive or time-critical situations.

Digital Marketing & Content Strategy

  • Oversee website content, email marketing, and social media strategy.
  • Partner with Digital Marketing Manager to manage paid digital advertising and evaluate ROI.
  • Ensure digital platforms drive ticket sales, Academy enrollment, community engagement, and accessibility.

Audience Growth Strategy

  • Develop and lead a multi-year audience growth strategy focused on acquisition, retention, frequency, and diversification of audiences.
  • Identify priority audience segments and pathways from first-time attendees to repeat and subscribed patrons.
  • Align marketing, communications, pricing, and programming narratives to support long-term audience development goals.
  • Partner with Artistic, Education, and Philanthropy teams to ensure audience growth strategies that support organizational priorities.

Audience Development & Community Engagement

  • Support partnerships with schools, community organizations, and local businesses.
  • Expand access and welcome new audiences through inclusive communications.
  • Use audience data and feedback to refine outreach strategies.
  • Collaborate with Education and Philanthropy teams to align audience development, enrollment, and stewardship strategies.

Budget & Operations Management

  • Develop and manage the marketing and communications budget.
  • Oversee vendors, freelancers, and contractors.
  • Track performance metrics and report outcomes to leadership.

Qualifications

  • 5–8+ years of marketing and communications experience, preferably in the performing arts or cultural sector
  • A bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, or related field
  • Proven success driving ticket sales and audience growth
  • Strong writing, editing, and project management skills
  • Appreciation for dance and the performing arts
  • Commitment to equity, inclusion, and community engagement

Work Environment

This role operates in the office with a hybrid arrangement, with some evening and weekend hours required during performance weeks and special events.

Compensation Range

$75,000 – $90,000 annually
