Charlotte Latin School is seeking a Communications Manager to join its Marketing and Communications team. The ideal candidate for this full-time position is equal parts creator and strategist — someone who sees every message as a chance to strengthen school pride, deepen connections, and cultivate belonging.

Position Summary

The Communications Manager is responsible for building meaningful connections across the school community through targeted communications, storytelling, and engagement strategies that amplify the school’s mission, culture, and voice.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Community Engagement & Internal Communications

  • Serve as the chief architect and steward of the school’s strategic communications efforts. 
  • Craft compelling communications that inform, educate, and celebrate students, faculty/staff, alumni, parents, donors, and the broader school community.
  • Design communication plans for major school initiatives (strategic plan updates, capital campaigns, events, etc). 
  • Ensure timely, clear, and inclusive messaging across a wide range of stakeholders. 
  • Partner with leaders, administrative offices, and parent volunteer groups to communicate key events, policies, and community news. 
  • Document the master communications plan and internal lists, such as an event calendar, to evaluate efficacy and propose improvements. Monitor internal channels to ensure consistency of information to constituents.

Content Creation & Messaging

  • Write and edit a wide range of content including newsletters, emails, press releases, social media posts, website copy, presentations, video scripts, event recaps, and profiles.
  • Serve as the associate editor of major publications, such as magazines and annual reports. 
  • Ensure messaging tone and style are consistent across all platforms and reflect the school’s values, brand, and voice.
  • Collaborate with the Editorial Director and Marketing Coordinators on social media campaigns and storytelling that deepen engagement.
  • Monitor community feedback and engagement across digital platforms. Track and report stakeholder feedback and leverage survey insights to improve messaging strategy.

Website & Digital Content Management

  • Update and design public-facing website, microsites, internal portals, and forms using the school’s website CMS.
  • Proactively monitor the website to update content and to ensure a cohesive, high-quality user experience. 
  • Manage consistent content across third-party educational websites and directories, including photography, school profile, and reviews.
  • Work closely with IT to report and resolve any issues that arise.
  • Utilize best practices for SEO, analyzing metrics, and reporting on performance.
  • Send push notifications for regular updates and emergency messages through the school’s text platform and app.

Media & Community Relations Support

  • Support the Director of Marketing & Communications in fostering relationships with local media and community organizations to generate coverage and visibility.
  • Develop press materials that position the school as a leader in independent education.
  • Coordinate interviews, press visits, and media events in partnership with school leadership.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, marketing, or a related field; advanced degree a plus.
  • 5+ years of experience in communications, ideally in a school or nonprofit setting.

Skills 

  • Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills — able to write with clarity, warmth, and intention.
  • Deep understanding of audience segmentation and tailoring messages for different constituencies.
  • Comfort interacting with a range of personalities, including students, faculty, and senior leadership.
  • Fluency with a variety of communications platforms and tools (Google Workspace, email marketing software, CMS, social media, and ).
  • A strong eye for detail, an intuitive grasp of tone, and a belief in the power of communication to build trust.
  • Enthusiasm and curiosity to learn about new technologies, processes, and tools.
  • Proactive and self-motivated. Engages with others collaboratively and positively. 
  • Familiarity with the independent school environment is highly desirable.
