Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Office of University Communications is responsible for the strategic management of the University’s overall public relations and reputation management activities. The department provides leadership, counsel and services to over 200 communicators across campus and works with those communicators to ensure a unified campus-wide communications strategy. Areas within University Communications include: Content Development, Executive Communications, Media Relations, Social Media, Visual Production, Issues Management, UNC Creative and the UNC Visitors Center.
Position Summary
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks a dynamic and visionary Associate Vice Chancellor for Marketing (AVC) to lead marketing initiatives that further elevate the university’s long-standing brand and reputation as the nation’s first and best public university. The AVC will design strategy and messaging to build awareness of Carolina’s reputation as a world-class research university. This new executive will have the opportunity to build a creative and data-driven strategy that inspires engagement from a variety of university stakeholders. This work includes establishing the university’s first comprehensive digital marketing strategies and infrastructure to drive university goals and help the university communicate more effectively in a quickly changing information landscape.
Reporting to the Vice Chancellor for University Communications, this pivotal role provides campus-wide marketing leadership and directly manages an in-house marketing staff within the central Office of University Communications. The AVC of Marketing also serves as principal advisor on all marketing and branding-related matters with a key responsibility to share expertise and guidance with the entire university. In doing so, this leader will work collaboratively with a vast array of colleagues, including senior campus leaders and deans, development colleagues, trustees, faculty, staff, alumni, students, communications professionals, and others across the University community.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent) with three years or greater of related professional experience in marketing, communications, journalism, public affairs, or a related field; for candidates demonstrating comparable professional backgrounds, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and five years or greater of relevant experience in substitution.
