Hello Thursday. PopUp Bagels opens their first Charlotte store next Friday in Ballantyne. I'm bullish. We should have bought the area franchise rights, but Power Brands Hospitality Group scooped it up!
PopUp Bagels does a shocking $6M per unit with 18% margins. Just bagels and schmears. Simple. Units cost $312K to $884K to open, depending on real estate. You can see why they quickly signed 300 franchise agreements!
I’m hearing they sell 2,000 bagels in an hour. Insanity. A franchise nerd told me it’s the next viral concept like Dave’s Hot Chicken or Crumbl. Anyways.
💼 Hot Job: Head of Communications at Bankrate ($220K – $360K, plus equity). Remote. Set vision for external comms plan. Part of Red Ventures.

Coin maker creates real life treasure hunt, hides $25K of gold coins in NC mountains
$25,000 in gold coins… WTF?!
Treasure hunt: Adam Howell, 45-year-old owner of The Achieve Mint, has created a real-life treasure hunt.
How it works: On Day One (today) there is a 420 mile circle on the website showing the treasure's location. Every morning this circle shrinks until on the 21st day, the circle is just 1 foot wide.
-
A webcam is trained on the treasure 24/7 and updated every 10 minutes, so that you can see the treasure out in the open at all times.
-
The $25K in gold coins are in a mason jar on the forest floor just off of a public hiking trail somewhere in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Premium hunters: You can pay $20 for an extra hint each morning. $10 of this goes into a winner-take-all side pot. So, if there are 10,000 premium hunters, the side pot goes up $100K!
Backstory: Adam participated in a similar treasure hunt with his family outside of Boston last year. "Such a unique and fun idea," Adam told me. A Boston meteorologist found the treasure and won $110K.
-
$2 from every premium signup goes towards the goal of raising $20K to help the ongoing cleanup efforts from Hurricane Helene.
-
The project, dubbed Countdown Treasure, went live 30 minutes ago. Happy hunting!

Money Talks is a weekly series showcasing how real people in Charlotte approach money.
Living situation: “I rent a townhouse. Rent is $2,200/mo. I split it 60% him and 40% me. Private landlords are the way. Your luxury apartment is scamming you!”
Job: “Events manager at a financial company. $83K base with a 7% bonus.”
Debt: “None. My college was paid for between a D1 sports scholarship and my dad, who graciously gave me his GI Bill.”
Best expense: “My Solidcore membership. I go at least 5x/wk and pay $225/mo. I will live and die by those blue lights.”
Splurge: “Clothes and accessories. I'm 26 and starting to really understand who I am. I dream of being a really cool eclectic mom one day with the best outfits and interesting style.”
Investment strategy: “I put 8% into a Roth 401(k) (company matches 6%) and I max out my Roth IRA. Rest is split between brokerage, emergency fund, and savings buckets for house and wedding. Net worth is about $70K.”
Rich in Charlotte: “Owning a house on Queens Road West. No explanation needed.”
On your mind: “I'm scared I'll never be able to afford to own a house, have kids, and pursue a lifestyle I want.”
