Rebuilding Together of Greater Charlotte (RTGC) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit with a mission of repairing homes, revitalizing communities, and rebuilding lives. RTGC brings our community together to address the affordable housing crisis, mobilizing contractors and volunteers from across the region to complete projects that make homes and communities safer and healthier for our neighbors.
The Director of Construction leads all critical home repair, rehabilitation, and accessibility modification projects, ensuring work meets local housing codes and funder specifications. This role oversees RTGC’s construction team, manages contractor procurement, and ensures high-quality project execution. The Director of Construction also participates as a key senior leadership team member to implement RTGC’s strategic plan and organizational goals.
Primary Responsibilities
Construction Oversight & Compliance:
- Hold a General Contractor license and serve as RTGC’s qualifier.
- Obtain or maintain industry certifications, including Certified Aging in Place Specialist, Lead Renovation, Repair, and Painting (RRP), and OSHA safety certifications.
- Direct all critical repair, rehabilitation, and accessibility modification projects to ensure compliance with local housing codes and funder specifications.
- Provide job site oversight to ensure all work is performed to code with high quality and durability.
- Assist with special projects, including improvements and repairs to community spaces and neighborhood improvement projects.
- Work with the Construction Administrator to ensure proper tracking and documentation of all project expenses, in-kind donations, and hours worked for projects.
Team Leadership & Training:
- Lead and manage the construction team. Direct reports include two Construction Managers, a Construction Administrator, and a Home Assessment Coordinator.
- Train and provide subject matter expertise for staff in the field.
- Review and approve all project work scopes and cost estimates, collaborating with senior leadership on project and funding guidelines.
Operational Efficiency & Strategic Planning:
- Continuously evaluate and improve the efficiency, quality, and client satisfaction of RTGC’s construction services.
- Oversee RTGC’s contractor procurement process, ensuring compliance with funder requirements, proper contractor risk transfer, and vetting contractors for quality repairs.
- Recruit, onboard, and maintain relationships with skilled trades and subcontractors (volunteer and paid) to ensure a sufficient pool of contractors to complete projects in a timely manner.
- Manage project scheduling, determining the appropriate balance of volunteers, RTGC construction staff, and subcontractors for each project.
- Ensure project planning is aligned with funding deadlines and an appropriate timeline for completion, taking into account volunteer groups and contractor scheduling needs with the order of work scope tasks to be completed.
- Participate as a senior leadership team member, contributing to strategic planning and organizational goal setting.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
- 10 or more years working in construction, home repair/renovation, or a related field.
- Commitment to serving low-income and diverse communities.
- Impeccable organizational and project management skills, significant attention to detail and follow-through, and ability to work on multiple tasks in a growing and changing environment.
- Excellent problem solver with attention to developing and improving systems to improve RTGC programs.
- Computer literacy in Microsoft Office and Google applications and experience with Salesforce and Asana a plus.
- Must be able to work with a flexible schedule, including some weekends, particularly during April and October, including attendance at some organizational evening events and training.
Physical and Other Requirements:
- Move materials weighing 50 lbs. pounds or more.
- Navigate construction sites, including rough or uneven ground, around debris and obstacles, and in crawl spaces and attics.
- Communicate while on an active construction site, including listening and speaking over significant ambient noise.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel independently from office to work sites and other events as required. If RTGC vehicle is not available, mileage will be reimbursed at the standard mileage rate set by the IRS, or a vehicle allowance will be provided.
Compensation and Benefits
This is a full-time, exempt position with a starting salary range between $75K-$85K, depending on experience. Annual bonus potential of up to 5% of salary based on KPIs. RTGC offers health, dental, vision, dependent coverage, and life insurance, paid vacation, holidays, sick, and parental leave. We offer a 4% matching 401k, fully vested after one year.
