Hello Thursday. 10 years ago today, both of my children's grandmothers were 15 feet away from each other on their respective operating tables under anesthesia at Florida Hospital.
My mom's kidneys had failed her the previous year. Dialysis wasn't working. It was bad.
My dad, two older brothers and I were all tested to see if we were a potential kidney donor match. None of us matched. That's when Elizabeth, my mother-in-law, asked for a donor kit.
Fast forward 10 years, and yes, my mother-in-law's kidney continues to keep my mom alive!
A week before the surgery, I remember asking Elizabeth why she volunteered so fast. She told me, "I want your children to grow up with both of their grandmothers." Anyways.

Job: "Manufacturing executive and partner owns a consulting business. My salary is $500K, plus bonus. Partner makes $300K.â
On your mind: âSchooling. We've got 3 kids, ages 6-10. Not only the expense, but the admissions competition. If you don't have connections, you get put on a waiting list that feels like a mile long."
Portfolio breakdown: "40% in individual stocks, 20% in index funds, 20% in bonds, and 20% in crypto. We invest roughly 30% of our income."
Do-it-yourself: "It is SO easy these days to buy low-cost index funds at 0.05% cost, it's really difficult to justify paying any financial advisor more than 0.30%."
Best expense: âMonthly concierge doctor. $250 per month. Can call or text at any time of the day and get answers and prescriptions.â
Rich in Charlotte: â$10M. House in Myers Park, country club membership, and private school. It's changed dramatically over the past 15 years we have been here. Feels very dynamic with so much new money.â
