Treasure hunt: Adam Howell, 45-year-old owner of The Achieve Mint, has created a real life treasure of $25K in gold coins. No, I’m not joking. Yes, Adam is nuts.
How it works: On Day One (today) there is a 420 mile circle on the website showing the treasure’s location. Every morning this circle shrinks until on the 21st day, the circle is just 1 foot wide.
- A webcam is trained on the treasure 24/7 and updated every 10 minutes, so that you can see the treasure out in the open at all times.
- The $25K in gold coins are in a mason jar on the forest floor just off of a public hiking trail somewhere in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Premium hunters: You can pay $20 for an extra hint each morning. $10 of this goes into a winner take all side pot. So, if there are 10,000 premium hunters, the side pot goes up $100K!
- The extra hint consists of a drone photo sent out every morning alongside the map update, showing the treasure on the forest floor from increasing heights.
- As the map shrinks, the drone photo rises, until eventually you’ll know exactly where the treasure is.
Backstory: Adam participated in a similar treasure hunt with his family outside of Boston last year. “Such a unique and fun idea,” Adam told me. A Boston meteorologist found the treasure and won $110K. I’m looking at you Brad Panovich!
- $2 from every premium signup goes towards the goal of raising $20K to help the ongoing cleanup efforts from Hurricane Helene.
- This project, dubbed Countdown Treasure, went live 30 minutes ago! Happy hunting!
