Hello Thursday. My 9 year old son listens to Myles Smith every night when he takes a shower. His favorite songs are “Stargazing” and “Solo.” |
Myles is playing in Charlotte next Thursday at 8pm! It’s also my son’s 10th birthday. |
I’m debating whether or not to buy $95 tickets for us. But the show is at The Underground, which is a standing room only venue (never been) — so, I’m scared my son wouldn’t be able to see anything. |
If you’ve watched a show at The Underground, reply back with advice. Anyways.💼 Hot Job: Senior Associate, Revenue Optimization at PetScreening. This startup is the No. 1 fastest growing pet-property tech SaaS company. Hiring manager is Jack Trepp, ex-Red Ventures and Wake Forest grad. |
👩 Shout-out: Blair Hayes, founder of Blair Skincare, for debuting her new line of skincare products and celebrating with a Garden & Gun worthy event at The Duke Mansion (although I didn’t get the invite). 114K Instagram followers. |

No. 1 best bagels in Charlotte are made in a family’s converted carport in Old Foxcroft

Doug and Kait Rose, founders of Team Rose Bread, sold out of last week’s batch of 1,100 bagels in under 2 hours. |
How it works: |
-
You can order as soon as menu goes live each week, which is often 5 p.m. on Friday, but sometimes earlier. Follow on Instagram to be the first to know. A bagel 6-pack costs $16.
-
Pickup is at Trinity Presbyterian Church or they’ll deliver for $4.50 if you live in the neighborhood.
|
“Our most ardent bagel fans set a reminder on their phones to order bagels as soon as things are available,” Doug told me. |
Family affair: Doug and Kait run the business with their 4 kids (ages 8-14). |
“The bread shop in our home didn’t begin as an incubator for some larger scale bakery pipe dream, but the hope to integrate work into our family life.” |
Expansion plans: “That’s the bagel-ion dollar question (our dad jokes almost as fresh as our bagels) we discuss multiple times a day.” |
I really shouldn’t be sharing my local bagel secrets with you, but that’s the type of unselfish blogger I am. Doug just opened up the menu for us, so ordering is live. |

Last Saturday, locally-owned Winestore hosted a blind tasting of “$68 Caymus vs. $25 Rivals“ and over 400 people showed up. Total of 8 wines to test. |
Winner: Their 2022 Highland Falls Proprietary Red which retails for $9.99. I bought several bottles. |
Shout out: I text founder and CEO Matt Hartley for details and he texted me back from Spain where he’s currently on a wine tasting trip. Clearly we all chose the wrong profession… |

Money Talks is a weekly series showcasing how real people in Charlotte approach money. Participate. |
Salary: “My wife and I have a combined income of roughly $185K. I maybe should have job hopped during the hiring craze after Covid. All my friends that switched employers got a good salary bump. We’ll see if loyalty pays off.” |
Net Worth: “Somewhere in the $1.5M – $1.75M range. My wife and I were both raised on the principle of not spending money we don’t have. Each year we do $23,000 to 401k, $8,300 to HSA, and $13,000 to Roth IRAs. We also have $700K in a self-directed brokerage account (no financial advisor), got lucky with Nvidia.” |
Splurge: “Golf. We joined a lower tier golf club (not where Ted would play). We love to golf and needed access to a pool for the kids. We got in the club before initiations went crazy.” |
What’s “rich” in Charlotte: “The wealthy own a home in Eastover, Foxcroft, or Myers Park while the Charlotte rich ‘own’ a home in these neighborhoods but are house poor.” |
Full story: Dad in his early 30’s with 5 credit cards loves golf, but not the food minimum |

HOUSEKEEPING

But seriously, how good do these bagels look?
|
|

|
Not photographed is the warm pumpkin chocolate chip bagel that Doug Rose handed me during our interview. I ate it too fast. |
Wish me luck: I’m playing in our annual neighborhood golf tournament tomorrow at Waterford Golf Club ($57). 2-man teams. 16 dads. I’ll be taking an Uber XL to the course just in case things get a little weird. |
